Casa Hrisicos, a building located in Traian Street no. 1, at the entrance to Ovidiu Square, was built in 1900, the builder being the wine merchant and the real estate owner Gheorghe Hrisicos, whose name the building bears.
The building was a landmark, being one of the oldest buildings that was preserved from the old configuration of the Ovidiu market.
It is a building with three basements, ground floor, mezzanine and two floors, 15 meters high, with an opening of 14 meters to Ovidiu Square, corner fabric and wide opening to Traian Street, which then led to the old train station.
At the time of construction, Hotel Hrisicos formed the corner of Traian and Pescarilor streets ( the latter with buildings on one side, disappeared over time, due to the numerous transformations that the market originally called Independence went through, later Ovidiu, with a much smaller area at the beginning ).
The plans were made by the French architect Louis Givért in an eclectic style; although the neoclassical elements are dominant, suggestions of the Art Nouveau style also appear.
The building was in a harmonious relationship with future buildings of origin and Viennese influence, designed mainly by architect Adolf Lintz for the eastern section and demolished for the most part by the end of the communist period.
The Casa Hrisicos building participated steadfastly in crucial moments in the history of Romania, including the Second World War and the Soviet occupation where the main balcony of the building was one of the witnesses. This balcony was used by Barbu Stefanescu Delavrancea and Take Ionescu for their political speeches. After the Revolution, Casa Hrisicos hosted the headquarters of the Romanian Foreign Trade Bank and later of the Romanian Commercial Bank.
